Life is often a journey of discovery, where the paths we take reveal more about ourselves and our true calling. My journey has been no different, starting from a deeply technical background and evolving into a quest for a more meaningful and impactful life.
I am Jianlei (Peter) Shi, with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, and in the majority of my career I was a circuit design engineer. My professional journey took me through the corridors of some of the world’s leading tech giants, including S3 Graphics, Qualcomm, Intel, and Apple. Grateful for the advancement of semiconductor industry in the past decades, I thrived in a career that demanded precision, innovation, and relentless pursuit of technological advancement. Each project, each design, was a puzzle that I loved to solve, bringing cutting-edge technology into the hands of users around the globe.
However, amidst the success and the constant buzz of the tech industry, I began to sense a growing disquiet. Despite achieving what many would consider success in career, something was missing. My days were consumed with work, leaving little time for my family or for reflecting on what I truly wanted from life. The relentless pace of the corporate world, while rewarding, left little room for the things I valued most: my faith, my family, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
It was during this period of introspection that I discovered real estate investing. Initially, it was a side venture—a way to diversify my income and build financial security. But as I delved deeper, I saw the potential it held for creating not just wealth, but also freedom. Real estate, particularly cash-flowing and value-add properties, became a means to achieve financial independence, freeing my time to pursue deeper, more fulfilling goals.
In 2021, I took a significant leap of faith. I decided to step away from my engineering career, a decision that felt both exhilarating and terrifying. I was leaving behind a stable, high-income position to embrace the uncertainty of entrepreneurship and a new mission: education mission to build up strong families to shine and impact.
This transition was a profound lifestyle change. My wife and I, motivated by our Christian faith, felt called to create an environment where we could more deeply influence our children’s upbringing and share our values. We founded Sunshine Youth Academy, a homeschooling initiative, and Sunshine Shine & Impact! Ministry, a ministry focused on equipping the next generation to lead impactful lives. This was our way of shining our light and making a positive impact, not just on our own family but on our community and beyond.
Leaving a well-paid job to focus on homeschooling and ministry work was financially daunting. We relied heavily on the passive income generated from our real estate investments. The single-family rentals we owned provided steady cash flow, while our investments in commercial real estate syndications brought in additional income and capital gains. For two years, we lived without a traditional W2 income, relying on our savings and the investments we had carefully built over time. It was a period of learning and growth, reminiscent of the wilderness experience faced by the Israelites, where we learned to rely on God for provision and guidance.
This experience deepened my understanding of what it means to have financial peace. It’s not merely about accumulating wealth, but about aligning your resources with your life’s purpose. It’s about being a faithful steward of the blessings we’ve received, using them not just for personal gain but to fulfill a higher calling. In the words of Robert Kiyosaki from his “Rich Dad” series, “Money is not the goal. Money has no value. The value comes from the dreams money helps achieve.”
In 2022, the vision of helping and impacting people around me through sharing my investing experience emerged. And I started building Financial Peace Investing, which began business operation in 2023 providing help to my friends in their investments. Our goal was clear: to help investors achieve financial freedom through investments in select niches with strong cash flow and returns, thereby giving them the most precious gift—time. With Financial Peace Investing, my aim is to share the knowledge and insights I’ve gained, helping others to become masters of their money, rather than its servants. I started blogging and sharing knowledge through 1-on-1 consultation, study group, and webinars on investing. These serve a guide to achieving true financial peace, where your investments work for you, enabling you to focus on what truly matters—whether it’s spending time with family, pursuing personal passions, or making a positive impact in the world.
